Andy Stoglin the Player, The Coach and “A Great Man”
Andy Stoglin, age 81, passed away this past week in Memphis, Tennessee. He was a longtime Basketball Coach and a life-long Friend to all that knew him and a 2002inductee into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame.
Current Hall of Fame President Ruben R. Ramirez said, “Although Andy Stoglin coached around the country, he was a UTEP Miner through and through.”
Stoglin was a former Jackson State University men’s head basketball coach for 14 years from 1989-2003, and a former UTEP Basketball Assistant Coach under Don Haskins and a longtime Assistant Coach for Nolan Richardson.
A tremendous basketball player as well, he played at then Texas Western College and for a time with the Harlem Globetrotters.
Stoglin was also well-known for his several years as the 8th grade Boys Basketball Coach at then Hillcrest Middle School (now housed by the Young Womens Academy) for Ysleta Independent School District.
Although he was a Basketball Coach, Stoglin was a great teacher and educator of young men in doing things the “Right Way” in Life.
