Armando “Jeep” Gutierrez a longtime EPISD Athletic Director Passes Away

Armando “Jeep” Gutierrez a 1991 Inductee into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame
passed away on January 2, 2024, at the age of 97 with his family by his side.

Mr. Gutierrez was a longtime El Pasoan and a Military Veteran as he served in the
United States Navy and earned three battle stars in World War II. After the War he
came to New Mexico Western in 1946, lettering in football for 4 years and leading the New Mexico Conference in rushing his senior year, earning his nickname, “Jeep”.

In 1957 he became the Head Football Coach at El Paso Tech with success in EPISD
before going into Administration and later becoming Athletic Director for the District from 1973-1981 and moving to a higher position in the district and retiring in 1988.

Current El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame President, Ruben R. Ramirez said “Mr.
Gutierrez was Athletic Director at the perfect time as he guided EPISD through the implementation of Title IX, and in growing women’s sports.”

Gutierrez was honored by the Texas High School Athletic Directors High School Hall of Honor in 1987, the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991 and throughout his adult life was a devout Texas Western and UTEP fan.

A Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home-West.

A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 12, 2024, at 1:00 pm at St. Matthew
Catholic Church, 400 W. Sunset Rd.

A Graveside Service will follow at Memory Gardens of the Valley Cemetery and
Services are entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home- West.
