In Memory of Ray Sanchez


Ray Sanchez, a local sports authorian and former sportswriter at the El Paso Herald Post, El Paso Times and El Paso Inc. has passed away today at the age of 94.

Edmund Stansbury, immediate past president of El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame and a 2015 Hall inductee and football star at Irvin High School and UCLA said, “We are deeply saddened about the passing of Mr. Ray Sanchez and know his life and the impact he’s made on El Paso sports will be celebrated and live on forever.”

Sanchez a 1961 inductee into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame was a founding board member of the Hall which started in 1955.

Ruben Ramirez also a Hall of Fame past president and a 2005 inductee into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame as one of the greatest ever photographers in El Paso’s illustrious sports history also worked with Mr. Sanchez for years at the El Paso Herald Post newspaper. Sanchez was like a father figure to Ramirez as the pair traveled to numerous Super Bowls to cover the event for the paper. Ramirez said “Ray Sanchez was a sports icon and an institution of El Paso sports and a great man.”

Sanchez also wrote several books on El Paso’s rich sports history and the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame would like to wish his family their condolences at his difficult time. Rest in Peace Mr. Ray Sanchez.
